| Report From Last Year's Convention MORE THAN 700 supervisors, parents, teachers, policy makers and educators attended NYCESPA’s 77th Convention on Jan. 30, 2010. EVENTS BEGAN early; by 8am people were streaming through the doors of the Brooklyn Marriott visiting the 113 exhibitors who filled the Vendors’ Galleries. Others gathered over coffee and breakfast, greeting long-lost friends and daily colleagues. By 8:45, the professional development program was in full swing. In all, 12 workshops provided a vast assortment of opportunities in two strands that bracketed the keynote speech of Dr. Roger Farr, noted specialist in the teaching and assessment of language. DR. FARR , a pioneer in literacy who has served as an educator for more than 50 years and has implemented numerous instructional models, offered his vision of a school that serves all members of its constituency. Drawing from his experiences as a consultant to schools across the nation, Dr, Farr addressed the importance of keeping students motivated and interested in reading. Practical suggestions and humorous anecdotes brought his ideas to life, and participants were able to take away strategies that could be implemented on Monday morning. Prior to Dr Farr’s presentation, Deputy Chancellor Santiago Taveras brought greetings to the packed ballroom. AT THE GALA luncheon, NYCESPA honored its five, 10 and 20-year Jubilarians. NAESP President Diane Cargile joined CSA President Ernest Logan and NYCESPA President Jermaine Garden in presenting certificates to the honorees. NYCESPA also honored Don Hall former sales representative for MacMillan McGraw-Hill for his 53 years of service to the NYC public schools. A “surprise” celebrity guest was the noted food and nutrition expert, Rachel Ray, who supported national and DOE initiatives to improve the quality of meals served to our children. Other dais guests included NYC Comptroller John Liu; Robert Jackson, Chairman of the NYC Council Education Committee; Deputy Chancellor Kathleen Grimm; Regent Geraldine Chapey; NAESP President Diane Cargile; Charlotte K. Frank, Sr. V.P. Mc-Graw Hill Companies; NYCESPA President Garden; President-Elect Lutchman and Convention Vice-President Caraballo.
